NKY Youth Football Hall of Fame Inductees
7/29/2010 - by NKS Editor
The Northern Ky Youth Football League (NKYFL) will be inducting its 3rd class into its Hall of Fame on July 30, 2010. The reception begins at 6:00 pm with dinner to follow at 7:00 pm at the Edgewood Senior Center.

This is the NKYFL's 53rd year teaching youth football and cheerleading in NKY. Some of the past inductees include Mark Pike, Jared Lorenzen, Doug Pelphry, Brandon Berger, Eddie Eviston, Scott Wiggins, Jeff Brady and Mike Webster.

This years class includes:

Marty Moore
Marty is a former NFL player who played linebacker for eight seasons for the New England Patriots and Cleveland Browns. Moore also holds the distinction of being the first Mr. Irrelevant ever to play in a Super Bowl (Super Bowl XXXI). Moore played high school football for Highlands and college football at Kentucky, playing in the 1993 Peach Bowl and becoming the final pick in the 1994 NFL Draft after his senior season.

Marty played for the Newport Fire Fighters.

Tim Odom
Odom was both a head coach at Simon Kenton (1990-1995) and an assistant coach at his high school alma mater, Moeller. In 1993 he coached Simon Kenton to their first appearance in the Kentucky Class AAA playoffs guiding the Pioneers to the second round.

While a student at Moeller, Odom earned All-Ohio and All-American honors as a guard and helped the Crusaders to back-to-back state championships in 1980 and 1981.

Odom was recruited to play for Ohio State where he was converted to a center. He went on to play for the Buckeyes' 1984 Big Ten Championship team. A chronic knee injury force him to miss the entire 1985 season and eventually give up football as a player.

Tim was a Ft. Mitchell Spartan and Founder of South Kenton Youth Football.

Bob Odom
Bob was 28 years (1978-2005) at Moeller high school where he helped coach five state championship and three national championship teams.

Over his career Odom has coached 31 offensive linemen who have gone on to play at D-1 colleges. Included in this number have been his son (Tim, Moeller 1982, Ohio State) and his grandson (Jake, Lakota West 2009, Eastern Illinois).

In his high school days Odom played on the 1959 Kentucky AA State Championship team from Henderson.
Bob was a coach for the Ft. Mitchell Spartans.

PJ Doyen
PJ played football for the Dayton Road Runners and has officiated in the NKYFL for many years. He is currently a Head Referee in the Ohio Valley Conference.

1958 Erlanger Lions Team
This team won the Pop Warner National championship. Coached by one of the founders of our league Harlan Strong. Twenty members of this team will be attending this event, Including there wives and children.

Pfc. Russell E. Madden
Russell was a member of the Bellevue Tigers for 8 years and a coach for 4 years.
According to the Department of Defense, Pfc. Russell E. Madden, 29, of Dayton, Ky., died June 23 at Charkh district, Konar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his vehicle with rocket fire. Madden had volunteered to be gunner in the lead vehicle of a convoy escort detail. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 91st Cavalry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Conn Barracks, Germany.

Pfc. Madden graduated from Bellevue High School in 2000, where he was an exceptional athlete; lettering in track and football. During the 1999 football season, when Bellevue was undefeated, he played linebacker and running back positions. Married and the father of two boys—one of whom has Cystic Fibrosis—he was in his first deployment to Afghanistan. In addition to his wife and sons, Madden leaves his parents and two siblings.

Jordan Logan
Jordan, a high school teacher and football coach died Friday evening of an apparent heart attack. Jordan Logan, 22, a substitute teacher and defensive coordinator at Ludlow High School, had worked out with the football team earlier in the day.

NKY Golf Review - Belterra Golf Resort
7/25/2008 - by NKS Editor
Belterra Golf Resort
Grade: Eagle

Immaculate! The Belterra golf course was very nice! I played the course in mid-July and the course was still in great shape besides the dry weather we've had. The greens and fairways were all plush and I cannot think of one bad thing to say about the course!

I was at Belterra for the beginning of my yearly golf trip as this year we decided to play here instead of Perry Park before heading down to Pine Valley Golf Resort in Elizabethtown, KY. Belterra has a golf package that included golf, one night stay and breakfast buffet for $125 per person. And it was well worth it!! The breakfast buffet was just as good as the golf course too! A definite value! It's definitely a must-try for golfers.

Some of the golfers in our group didn't stay at the hotel so they had to pay $76 for the greens fees. Seems a little steep but the course is stellar and well worth the price if you have not played it yet.
 Beat Writers and Quarterspondents Wanted
7/22/2010 - by NKS Editor
The 2010 NKY High School football season is just 4 weeks away! And NKYSports.com is looking for contributors to the website. This year we will be doing our Game of the Week Video Webcast (schedule soon to be released), and we're also looking for sideline reporters, quarterspondents (sending scores every quarter), and individuals who like to be involved with HS Sports.

This is a great opportunity for High School and College students interested in TV, Radio, Communications, etc. to gain some real-life experience. If you know of anyone who might be interested please have them email Ben Bleser at ben@nkysports.com.

NKY Golf Review - Hickory Sticks 2008
7/25/2008 - by NKS Editor
Hickory Sticks Golf Course
Grade: Par

I played in an outing at Hickory Sticks this summer and the course has not changed one bit from last year. It's still in pretty good shape and well kept. We always come back to Hickory Sticks because it has some challenging holes and is economical on the wallet.

NKY Golf Course Review - Perry Park
10/26/2007 - by NKS Editor
Perry Park Golf Resort
Grade: Par

Perry Park has now added a new nine holes to their golf course and named them Antlers, Whitetail, and Buckskin. I played Antlers and Whitetail, which only has two of the new wholes on Whitetail. All of Antlers' holes are from the original 18.

The course itself is in pretty good shape, especially the greens, but the fairways had a few rough spots. One of the things I don't like is if you start on Antlers, you have to play one of the more difficult par 5's first. This hole is narrow, goes up hill and is windy. Not a good hole to start on for most average golfers.

I did like the two new holes I played on Whitetail. The holes were not very long but had more sandtraps and more mounds along the fairways. I am looking forward to playing the other new holes soon.

Thank goodness we got an early tee time this day because there seemed to be many "less than average" hackers out there behind us. We also found many divot marks on the greens not fixed. So, our group tried to help out and fix as most we could.

Overall, Perry Park is a pretty open course with some good scenic views, especially when the deer come out, and there are A LOT of deer. It's a simple course but does offer a challenge if you play from the back tees.
Lindale Golf Club - GREAT Value for a nice course!
11/5/2007 - by Rex
Lindale Golf Club off US-52 in Ohio is a fantastic course for much less than what most courses around the Greater Cincinnati area cost. Normal summer rates are only $29.50 for weekends, which includes green fees & cart! The course is currently in great shape, VERY green! with some dry spots here & there in the fairways. The greens are a bit hard, but what can you expect from the huge drought we had over the summer? The course is fairly flat with pretty much wide open fairways. It does have a few dog-leg holes & a few with water that comes into play. On course toughness on a scale of 1-10, I'd give it a 7. Keep it in the fairway & expect a great round!
