 Holiday Basketball Tournaments in Kentucky
12/30/2008 - by NKS Editor
It seems like every holiday season more and more basketball tournaments are springing up in Kentucky. This year is no exception as boys and girls basketball teams are playing all over the state of Kentucky this holiday season. The Northern Kentucky teams are involved with 26 different tournaments the last 10 days of December.

In the Ashland Invitational for boys, Campbell County defeated Beechwood 54-50 in the Championship game. One of the local boys' tournaments is the Lloyd Invitational. This a tournament Holmes won last year and they will play Henderson County tonight (Dec 30). Other teams involved in the Lloyd Invitational include Walton-Verona, Lloyd, Villa Madonna, Silver Grove, Conner, Newport, Grant County and Holy Cross.

One of the local tournaments for the girls is the Northern Exposure Classic. Notre Dame Academy made it to the finals of this tournament against Rowan County where they lost in Overtime 65-60. Other teams in the Northern Exposure were Boone County, Ryle and Brossart.

In the Republic Bank Holiday Classic played at Lexington Catholic, Highlands went 3-1 with wins over Huntington WV, Sacred Heart and Assumption. Their only loss was to DuPont Manual 77-59.

Record wise, here is how some of the NKY teams are doing so far:

Boys:
Holmes 10-1
Bishop Brossart 8-1
Grant County 8-4
Campbell County 7-1

NKY Golf Review - Belterra Golf Resort
7/25/2008 - by NKS Editor
Belterra Golf Resort
Grade: Eagle

Immaculate! The Belterra golf course was very nice! I played the course in mid-July and the course was still in great shape besides the dry weather we've had. The greens and fairways were all plush and I cannot think of one bad thing to say about the course!

I was at Belterra for the beginning of my yearly golf trip as this year we decided to play here instead of Perry Park before heading down to Pine Valley Golf Resort in Elizabethtown, KY. Belterra has a golf package that included golf, one night stay and breakfast buffet for $125 per person. And it was well worth it!! The breakfast buffet was just as good as the golf course too! A definite value!

Some of the golfers in our group didn't stay at the hotel so they had to pay $76 for the greens fees. Seems a little steep but the course is stellar and well worth the price if you have not played it yet.
Beechwood and Highlands Bring Home State Titles
12/15/2008 - by NKS Editor
Northern Kentucky was 2 of 4 this past weekend in winning the State Football Championships. Beechwood wins its 11th State Championship while Highlands wins its 18th.

Class 1A
Beechwood defeated Hazard 14-7 to win the Class 1A Championship. Beechwood scored all their points in the first half. Matt Rigdon started the scoring in the first quarter with a 6-yd touchdown run, then Rigdown capped off the half with a very important 3-yd pass to Nieco Teipel with only three seconds remaining. Hazard's only touchdown came in the fourth quarter.

Class 2A
NewCath found themselves down 13-0 in the third quarter before their defense started to put them back into the game. With 7:22 to go in the third, Ben Parr returned a fumble for 39 yards and a touchdown. On Fort Campbell's next possession, Chris Kelly intercepted a pass on their opponent's 5-yard line. Rob Kues then followed that up with a 10-yard scamper into the end zone and tying the game at 13.

NewCath would then take the lead in the fourth quarter as Ben Parr scored on a 37-yard run. The Falcons followed with their own touchdown to tie the game once again at 20. With 3:30 remaining Chris Grosser kicked a 35-yard field goal to give the Breds a 23-20 lead, but with 1:44 left, Fort Campbell scored on a 59-yard halfback pass. The Falcons missed the extra point leaving the door open for the Breds to at least kick a field goal for a tie and a chance at overtime. But the Breds were shut down and Fort Campbell wins their 2nd consecutive State title over NewCath 26-23.

Class 5A
The final score was 35-15 but this game was much closer than final shows. Christian County gave Highlands a good fight until the fourth quarter where the Bluebirds scored the last 14 points of the game.

Christian County was the first team to score but Highlands answered with a 7-yard run by Clint Craword making the first quarter score 7-6 Highlands. In the second quarter, the Colonels scored on a field goal while the Bluebirds scored another touchdown followed by a 2-point conversion making the halftime score 15-9.

In the second half, Christian County managed one more touchdown, but Highlands would score on touchdown runs of 15 (Josh Connor), 50 (Tony Guidugli), and 11 (Clint Crawford) giving Highlands a 35-15 win over Christian County and back-to-back State Titles.

Class 6A
Simon Kenton was a huge underdog in this game and the score showed it. Trinity was leading at halftime 41-0 and scored on their first six possessions. The final score was 48-0.

Congratulations to all four NKY teams for a very successful season!

 Football Teams SWEEP for State
12/6/2008 - by NKS Editor
What a night for Northern Ky Football! For the first time in history, Northern Kentucky will send four teams to the state football finals. The most surprising outcome, was Simon Kenton's 28-10 win over Louisville Male. Simon Kenton was trailing 10-0 after the first quarter, but scored scored on a 5-yd Chad Lawrence run in the second quarter to make the score 10-7 at halftime. Simon Kenton then scored 21 unanswered points in the second half with 2 short touchdown passes to Miles Simpson, and a 66-yd touchdown run by Simpson. Simon Kenton will face Louisville Trinity next Saturday evening, December 13 at 7:00 PM for the Class 6A Championship game.

In Class 1A, Beechwood jumped on Crittenden County early with a 14-0 lead after the first quarter. Neico Teipel rushed for 178 yards and 4 TD's. The Tigers will make their 13th trip to the State Finals and are looking to win their 11th Championship as they will play Hazard on Friday, December 12 at 11:00 AM.

In Class 2A, Newcath score 19 unanswered points in the second half to win over Corbin 26-7. NewCath will have a rematch against Fort Campbell who defeated the Breds last year 21-7 in the Championship game. The game will be played on Saturday, December 13 at 11:00 AM.

And lastly, in Class 5A, Highlands defeated Whitley County 42-16 thanks to 3 turnovers by the Colonels and the inability to score within the redzone. The Bluebirds offense was led by Tony Guidugli who had 2 TD runs and a 78-yd TD past to Nick Buten. Highlands will play Christian County on Friday, December 12 at 7:00 PM.

Four NKY Teams Going for State
12/4/2008 - by NKS Editor
Last year, Northern Kentucky had 3 football teams make it to the State Finals (Beechwood, NewCath & Highlands). This year, the same 3 teams are looking to repeat their visit, and Simon Kenton is looking to join them. On Friday, December 5, these teams will play in the Kentucky State Semi-Finals for Class 1A, 2A, 5A and 6A.

CLASS 2A
NewCath (12-1) at Corbin (13-0)

Last year, these two teams played in the playoffs on NewCath's home field where the Breds won 28-16. This year, NewCath will travel to Corbin to face the Redhounds.

CLASS 5A
Highlands (12-1) at Whitley County (12-1)

Whitley County HS Aerial view

Coach Jim Black has turned the Whitley County Colonels football program completely around. The past two years, Whitley County has a combined record of 4-17, but this year is a different story with a turn-around record of 12-1. This is the first ever semi-final game for the Colonels.

CLASS 6A
Simon Kenton (9-4) at Male (9-4)

Can the Simon Kenton Pioneers keep the magic alive? Simon Kenton has won their past 6 games with 2 of those playoff wins against teams they had lost to earlier in the year.

NKY Golf Review - Hickory Sticks 2008
7/25/2008 - by NKS Editor
Hickory Sticks Golf Course
Grade: Par

I played in an outing at Hickory Sticks this summer and the course has not changed one bit from last year. It's still in pretty good shape and well kept. We always come back to Hickory Sticks because it has some challenging holes and is economical on the wallet.

NKY Golf Course Review - Perry Park
10/26/2007 - by NKS Editor
Perry Park Golf Resort
Grade: Par

Perry Park has now added a new nine holes to their golf course and named them Antlers, Whitetail, and Buckskin. I played Antlers and Whitetail, which only has two of the new wholes on Whitetail. All of Antlers' holes are from the original 18.

The course itself is in pretty good shape, especially the greens, but the fairways had a few rough spots. One of the things I don't like is if you start on Antlers, you have to play one of the more difficult par 5's first. This hole is narrow, goes up hill and is windy. Not a good hole to start on for most average golfers.

I did like the two new holes I played on Whitetail. The holes were not very long but had more sandtraps and more mounds along the fairways. I am looking forward to playing the other new holes soon.

Thank goodness we got an early tee time this day because there seemed to be many "less than average" hackers out there behind us. We also found many divot marks on the greens not fixed. So, our group tried to help out and fix as most we could.

Overall, Perry Park is a pretty open course with some good scenic views, especially when the deer come out, and there are A LOT of deer. It's a simple course but does offer a challenge if you play from the back tees.
Lindale Golf Club - GREAT Value for a nice course!
11/5/2007 - by Rex
Lindale Golf Club off US-52 in Ohio is a fantastic course for much less than what most courses around the Greater Cincinnati area cost. Normal summer rates are only $29.50 for weekends, which includes green fees & cart! The course is currently in great shape, VERY green! with some dry spots here & there in the fairways. The greens are a bit hard, but what can you expect from the huge drought we had over the summer? The course is fairly flat with pretty much wide open fairways. It does have a few dog-leg holes & a few with water that comes into play. On course toughness on a scale of 1-10, I'd give it a 7. Keep it in the fairway & expect a great round!
