It seems like every holiday season more and more basketball tournaments are springing up in Kentucky. This year is no exception as boys and girls basketball teams are playing all over the state of Kentucky this holiday season. The Northern Kentucky teams are involved with 26 different tournaments the last 10 days of December.
In the Ashland Invitational for boys, Campbell County defeated Beechwood 54-50 in the Championship game. One of the local boys' tournaments is the Lloyd Invitational. Other teams involved in the Lloyd Invitational include Walton-Verona, Lloyd, Villa Madonna, Silver Grove, Conner, Newport, Grant County and Holy Cross.
One of the local tournaments for the girls is the Northern Exposure Classic. Notre Dame Academy made it to the finals of this tournament against Rowan County where they lost in Overtime 65-60. Other teams in the Northern Exposure were Boone County, Ryle and Brossart.
In the Republic Bank Holiday Classic played at Lexington Catholic, Highlands went 3-1 with wins over Huntington WV, Sacred Heart and Assumption. Their only loss was to DuPont Manual 77-59.

| Beechwood and Highlands Bring Home State Titles |
|
|
| 12/15/2008 - by NKS Editor |

Northern Kentucky was 2 of 4 this past weekend in winning the State Football Championships. Beechwood wins its 11th State Championship while Highlands wins its 18th.
Class 1A
Beechwood defeated Hazard 14-7 to win the Class 1A Championship. Beechwood scored all their points in the first half. Matt Rigdon started the scoring in the first quarter with a 6-yd touchdown run, then Rigdown capped off the half with a very important 3-yd pass to Nieco Teipel with only three seconds remaining. Hazard's only touchdown came in the fourth quarter.
Class 2A
NewCath found themselves down 13-0 in the third quarter before their defense started to put them back into the game. With 7:22 to go in the third, Ben Parr returned a fumble for 39 yards and a touchdown. On Fort Campbell's next possession, Chris Kelly intercepted a pass on their opponent's 5-yard line. Rob Kues then followed that up with a 10-yard scamper into the end zone and tying the game at 13.
NewCath would then take the lead in the fourth quarter as Ben Parr scored on a 37-yard run. The Falcons followed with their own touchdown to tie the game once again at 20. With 3:30 remaining Chris Grosser kicked a 35-yard field goal to give the Breds a 23-20 lead, but with 1:44 left, Fort Campbell scored on a 59-yard halfback pass. The Falcons missed the extra point leaving the door open for the Breds to at least kick a field goal for a tie and a chance at overtime. But the Breds were shut down and Fort Campbell wins their 2nd consecutive State title over NewCath 26-23.
Class 5A
The final score was 35-15 but this game was much closer than final shows. Christian County gave Highlands a good fight until the fourth quarter where the Bluebirds scored the last 14 points of the game.
Christian County was the first team to score but Highlands answered with a 7-yard run by Clint Craword making the first quarter score 7-6 Highlands. In the second quarter, the Colonels scored on a field goal while the Bluebirds scored another touchdown followed by a 2-point conversion making the halftime score 15-9.
In the second half, Christian County managed one more touchdown, but Highlands would score on touchdown runs of 15 (Josh Connor), 50 (Tony Guidugli), and 11 (Clint Crawford) giving Highlands a 35-15 win over Christian County and back-to-back State Titles.
Class 6A
Simon Kenton was a huge underdog in this game and the score showed it. Trinity was leading at halftime 41-0 and scored on their first six possessions. The final score was 48-0.
Congratulations to all four NKY teams for a very successful season!
