Newport and Boone County advance to the Sweet 16
3/8/2010 - by NKS Editor
The basketball action for the 9th Region Tournament at the Bank of Kentucky Center this past week was exhilirating, and ended in shocking fashion. The Newport Wildcats defeated the defending State Champions, Holmes Bulldogs, 60-34 sending shock waves throughout the state of Kentucky.

Demarco Foster scored 26 points to lead the Wildcats to their first trip to the Sweet 16 since 1962. Foster was also named the tournament's MVP. And Newport's tenacious man-to-man defense allowed only 9-of-45 shooting for the Bulldogs.

Newport came into the 9th Region tournament as a District loser having lost to NewCath by 30 points. The Wildcats then defeated Ryle and CovCath before facing the favored Bulldogs. The Wildcats had lost their previous 2 games vs Holmes this year, 59-41 and 61-51, but those games were in December!

Newport will play the winner of Region 2 on March 17 at 6:30 PM at Rupp Arena. Boys Sweet 16 Bracket

For the girls 9th Region Championship, the game was no different than the previous 2 meetings this past year . . . close! Boone County had defeated Ryle this past year 58-53 and 42-41 in the District Championship game.

The Rebels defeated the Raiders 32-30 and head to the Sweet 16 for the second straight year. The Rebels were lead by Sydney Moss who finished the game with 18 points and 13 rebounds and was named the tournament's MVP.

Boone County will play Bowling Green (28-2) on Thursday, March 11 at 12:00 PM at E.A. Diddle Arena in Bowling Green. Girls Sweet 16 Bracket
