Headed to State

Northern Kentucky will have a great representation of football in the State Tournaments once again with three teams headed down to Western Kentucky University this weekend. The Russell Athletic/KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl will begin with Highlands playing on Friday, while NewCath and Cooper playing on Saturday. We will have broadcast links to all the games. Note: video broadcasts will only be available for replay by the KHSAA. Good luck to all the teams down State!

CLASS 2A – NewCath vs. Caldwell County
Saturday, Dec 1 at 12:00 PM EST
Caldwell County (11-3) defeated DeSales last week 43-31 and will now face NewCath (10-4). Caldwell County holds a 4 game winning streak with their last lost coming to Mayfield 48-7 in October. The Breds have an 8 game winning streak after defeating Somerset last week 27-18. Senior RB, Dylan Hayes, led the Breds with 125 rush yards and 2 TD’s while Junior WR, Mac Franzen, had 127 receiving yards and 1 TD. Since 2005, we have no history of these teams playing each other. The Breds are looking for their 5th State Title.

CLASS 4A – Highlands vs. Collins
Friday, Nov 30 at 8:00 PM EST
Collins (11-3) destroyed Warren East last week 58-7 while Highlands (13-1) beat LexCath 61-28. Senior QB, Donovan McCoy, led the Birds last week with 220 rush yards, 171 pass yards, and 4 total TD’s. The Bluebirds are looking for an amazing sixth straight State Championship and are favored to do so against the Titans.

CLASS 5A – Cooper vs. Bowling Green
Saturday, Dec 1 at 4:00 PM EST
Cooper started their football program in 2008 with a 2-8 record. The Jaguars are now 13-1 this season and find themselves in the Class 5A State Championship game. The Jaguars defeated Harlan County last week 17-7 and will play the Bowling Green Purples who beat John Hardin last week 14-13. Bowling Green is undefeated at 14-0 and is ranked #3 in the State, which includes wins over St. Xavier and LexCath.
