Republic Bank Football Game of the Week - Quarterfinals
11/15/2012 - by NKS Editor
This week’s Game of the Week features the Walton-Verona Bearcats (10-2) vs. the Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds (8-4) in the Quarterfinals of the State Playoffs.

Walton-Verona defeated Lloyd last week 33-26 while NewCath blew out Holy Cross 52-0.

This will be the first game ever between these two football programs. The Bearcats have rushed for a team combined 3,112 yards with 4 players with at least 500 yards rushing. They’ll be facing a Breds’ defense that hasn’t allowed more than 14 points in a game the past 5 weeks. The Bearcats will have to stop the Breds’ top offensive threat, Dylan Hayes. The Senior RB has rushed for 1,468 yards and 24 TD’s.

Game of the Week Replay
Last week’s Game of the Week was another exciting playoff game as Simon Kenton defeated Campbell County 29-21 in the Class 6A Playoffs. Our Republic Bank Player of the Game was QB Brennan Kuntz who led the Pioneers with 3 TD’s (2 rush, 1 passing). You can see the Replay of the game below.

NKYSports.com Replay – Pioneers vs. Camels.

CLASS 1A – Frankfort at Beechwood
Frankfort beat Bellevue last week 26-0 while Beechwood took care of Paris 63-16. The Panthers come into this game with only one lost (11-1). The Tigers (8-4) defeated Frankfort last year 51-19 and has won the last 4 games against the Panthers since 2005.

CLASS 4A – CovCath at Highlands
CovCath (9-3) recorded a huge win over Johnson Central last week 45-15. They will now face Highlands (11-1). The Bluebirds defeated Ashland Blazer last week 52-13. Highlands beat CovCath earlier this year (Sep 21) 35-21 and are now looking for their 9th straight win over the Colonels.

The top two teams in NKY should provide another great show on Friday night featuring two of the best QB’s in the area. CovCath’s Blake Bir leads NKY in passing with 2,653 yards and 37 TD’s. Highlands’ Donovan McCoy is right behind Bir with 2,300 yards and 29 TD’s passing to go along with his 735 yards rushing and 13 rush TD’s.

CLASS 5A – Cooper at Franklin County
Cooper (11-1) defeated South Oldham last week 49-29 and will now face a Franklin County team that beat the only team Cooper’s lost to, Conner. Everyone was looking forward to a Conner/Cooper rematch this weekend but Conner’s turnovers led to a 62-59 loss to Franklin County.

Franklin County is undefeated (12-0) and led by QB Logan Woodside and RB Ryan Timmons. Woodside has thrown for 2,760 yards and 39 TD’s while Timmons has 1,260 yards rushing and 25 TD’s. Cooper will counter with their combo of QB Tyler Morris and RB AJ Collins. Morris has thrown for 1,481 yards and 17 TD’s while Collins has rushed for 1,462 yards and 16 TD’s. This will also be the first time these two teams have played each other.

CLASS 6A – Simon Kenton at Scott County
Simon Kenton (9-3) gets another shot at Scott County (11-1) in the Class 6A Quarterfinals. Scott County’s only loss came to Highlands back in Week 1. The Pioneers lost to Scott County 3 weeks ago 56-6 and will have their hands full once again as the Cardinals have outscored their opponents 236 to 29 in their past 4 games.
